Snellville District and Curriculum
Snellville Schools are a part of Gwinnett County Public Schools. The curriculum follows Common Core Georgia Performance Standards, a set of standards at every grade level in all core subjects The subjects are broken down into major topics and the skills inherent are detailed for teachers to use as their learning objectives. Teachers have the chance to determine the best way to deliver their lessons based on the students in their class.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Snellville District Curriculum
English Language Arts focuses on reading, speaking, listening and language skills, progressing to more complex texts and writing assignments. Students rely on informational texts and creative works in their literacy and writing learning, giving students time to develop comprehension and language skills. Students also learn presentation and listening skills, and how to draw ideas from and discuss presentations.
Middle school and high school learning continues prior English Language Arts skills, emphasizing understanding and analysis of texts and identification of story elements in different genres of literature. Writing continues to evolve, focusing on the demonstration of persuasive, expository and narrative skills. Students are taught how to brainstorm ideas, pre-write, draft, edit and revise before presenting their final work. The use of this workshop model allows students to collaborate in areas like peer editing and give them a chance to learn how to give feedback.

Keeping Informed: Recent Snellville Educational News
- Snellville Days - Snellville Days is an annual Arts and Crafts Festival showing off all the town has to offer to families and visitors. Held May 3rd and 4th this year, the two day event begins with a parade featuring a different local celebrity every year as Grand Marshall. For over 40 years, Snellville Days Arts and Crafts Festival offers hundreds of community and food vendors, performances and entertainment, crafts and a kid’s field, all centered around a different theme each year. Held at T.W. Briscoe Park, the festival is an annual event you don’t want to miss.
- New London Theatre - The New London Theatre is an opportunity for the whole family to experience their artistic side. A number of performances and musicals are shown almost every weekend throughout the year. Auditions are held frequently, inviting the community to be a part of the show! Workshops and summer camps are offered during the summer for kids and teens. From comedy to musicals to drama, camps include improv, character development, even how to find a talent agent, finishing the session with a performance for friends and families The New London Theatre is an opportunity for all ages to enjoy the arts.
- Briscoe Park - Briscoe Park is THE park of Snellville and one that offers outdoor fun for everyone. Recreational activities for children, teens and adults are offered from sport leagues to dance classes. You can practice or find a game being played on any one of the number of ball fields and soccer fields, or set up a picnic in the gazebo or near one of the playgrounds. There is even an outdoor unheated pool along with a beautiful lake! The Parks and Recreation Department continues to make the outdoors enjoyable for the whole family, with additions, improvements and the development of the new Oak Road Park.

Chalk Talk: Balancing School and a Part Time Job
As students enter high school, the idea of a part time job may come to mind or even in your child’s mind. Many students have one, whether it is baby-sitting, mowing lawns on the weekend, or working at an ice cream shop. However, school responsibilities (such as sports, academics, other extra-curricular activities), work AND family or social life, students eventually face a challenge of managing all. Parents may face that challenge too – seeing their child running from one activity to another or staying up late to finish homework. If a job is a topic of discussion for you and your child, be sure that your student is ready for it. Look at all they have going on at that moment – how are their grades? What activities at school are they involved in? How busy is their social life? How busy is the family? Is all of this manageable for your child as well as you? Discuss the importance of work with your child but at the same time, emphasize school as most important. Allow your child to have the work experience if they want and if you want them to. Just as with anything else, no one knows unless they try. The key is making the experience manageable yet not overwhelming for everyone.
