Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Snowflake District Curriculum

The Common Core Standards provide students with a rich curriculum that starts with basic reading and writing skills in kindergarten, including letter recognition and sounds, moving on to writing and comprehension skills necessary for academic success. As students progress, new skills are taught on the basis built in kindergarten, with skills progressing all the way to high school. By this time, students will have developed good communication skills in oral and written work.

In Mathematics, students begin by learning the number recognition and how to write the numbers. Students learn different mathematical operations by using objects to perform basic functions. Objects of different shapes and colors are also utilized to help students learn the different shapes and colors and how to organize them into proper groups. These are the basic algebraic and geometry skills students use to develop their quantitative reasoning and spatial awareness needed for the higher order problems.

Chalk Talk: Ways to Volunteer at Your Child's School

There are many different ways to volunteer and get involved at your child's school. Volunteer to read to students or play host or hostess for a class party. You can also volunteer to run copies for teachers or help students who are lagging behind. Volunteer to go along on a class field trip as a chaperon. You will find yourself enjoying the time with the children. Maybe you can even chaperon for a school dance or fundraising event. Not only will you be helping the teachers, you will be encouraging your child by being proactive within their community. It doesn't even have to be in their classroom, and sometimes as children get older it's better to volunteer in a different classroom, any involvement will make the point about the importance of education. Get involved and learn along with your child.
