Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Soledad District Curriculum

In Language Arts, communicating knowledge and ideas is one of the major goals of the curriculum. Through a scaffolded learning experience in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, students develop the ability to read and write fiction and non-fiction and think critically about ideas they encounter. There is an emphasis on the structure of language and students are taught decoding and vocabulary development strategies.

Teachers are able to design their own lessons to accomplish these goals and use different types of assessments to gauge how their students are doing. Project and portfolio-based assessments are increasingly common as they show a whole range of planning and execution skills that students are capable of and statewide assessments are carefully aligned to grade-specific learning objectives as a measure of the entire educational system.

Soledad District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum that is used in Soledad offers a logical progression of standards which builds to a thorough understanding of the principles and knowledge central to each subject. The curriculum provides a guideline for teachers to plan lessons which convey the skills and strategies within a topic while also developing an understanding of the broader concepts to which these skills are aligned.

The curriculum for Math is prepared to develop a range of strategies that students can use to problem-solve, understand data, and employ reasoning skills. Students are initially introduced to basic topics like numerical sense, geometry and patterning, and analyzing data through graphs or other presentations of data sets. Students are further introduced to operational thinking using algebraic equations and through the use of tools to measure and compute.

We currently cover the following Soledad-area school district: Soledad Unified School District.
