Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Solvang District Curriculum

The Math curriculum organizes its subject matter into numbers and quantities, data analysis, algebraic operations, and geometric functions as the major skills students develop through eighth grade. As students move into high school, these topics become more advanced and students are able to take trigonometry and pre-calculus. In Science, investigation and experimentation are highlighted throughout the topics of biology, life science, earth and environmental science, and technology. Science, in particular, has seen increased attention and there are growing offerings within the Science Department.

All range of programs like those designed to support students who are learning English, and students who require an alternative setting, will have a curriculum that aims to provide high quality instructional objectives. Students become prepared through the learning strategies they gain, and the ways of solving problems and communicating ideas they develop, to take on subjects that are of personal interest.

Solvang District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The school districts that students in Solvang attend follow the framework laid out in the California Content Standards. These are framework documents that explain the goals of the subject, approaches to learning, suggested sources, and targeted expectations for learning within each subject.

The subject areas are designed as a progression of knowledge gained so that students become highly skillful in the areas of communication, critical literacy, choosing problem-solving methods, and understanding universal concepts. Language Arts provides students with the literacy skills to comprehend literature and non-fiction and be able to analyze, interpret, and evaluate its content. Writing is a critical focus, and students are provided with strategies for writing for different purposes. Language conventions are taught and students are expected to write using formal English.

We currently cover the following Solvang-area school district: Ballard Elementary School, Solvang School, Santa Ynez Valley Union High School District.
