Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Somers Point District Curriculum

Both local districts seek to provide a well-rounded education for all students. To achieve this goal, curricula have been developed that establish learning targets for students in each grade in nine core subject areas. The districts’ curricula are aligned with one another and with the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. By providing this alignment to research-based standards, the districts ensure that they provide the best learning opportunities for students to facilitate their academic, social and emotional growth.

The comprehensive math curriculum outlined by the Common Core State Standards includes an in-depth study of algebra. As part of this curriculum, students learn how to interpret expressions and parts of expressions, such as coefficients, terms and factors. Students acquire the ability to factor a quadratic expression to reveal the function it defines. Rewriting rational expressions is also learned. Students use polynomial identities to solve problems, and learn how to create equations as well.

Chalk Talk: Encourage More Reading

Children today have very busy schedules between school, homework, family time, jobs and extracurricular activities. It can be difficult for your child to find some downtime to relax, but when they do, they might spend it playing video games or texting their friends. A great way for your child to unwind is to read. Reading has been shown to reduce blood pressure and heart rate. The calming effect of getting lost in a book is also helpful to prepare for bedtime. There are academic benefits as well. Obviously, the more children read, the better they become at it. Children who read a lot also have improved concentration, expanded vocabularies and increased creativity. Encouraging your child to read more will help them relax and will improve their overall performance in school.
