Somerset District and Curriculum

Somerset school districts follow the curriculum of the Kentucky Department of Education. The Kentucky Core Academic Standards are outlined in the curriculum from the Department and teachers meet these standards when they design their lessons. Common Core Standards are expected for the basic academic subjects and follow a progressive manner whereby students deepen their knowledge during the course of their education. Students are also encouraged to join extracurricular groups or sports teams so that they are also engaged in pursuing their personal interests.

We currently cover the following Somerset-area school districts: Pulaski County Schools and Somerset Independent Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Somerset District Curriculum

In Science, students are taught to observe the world with an inquiring mind. Through this they build knowledge of the physical world. In middle school, among other things, students in Science study the flora and fauna of Kentucky. This is how they learn about the environment in their home state. The study involves mammals, insects, fish, wild flowers trees and shrubs among many others. In this way students can develop interest in environmental aspects of their world. The circle of life from algae to amphibians is learned at this level.

In Literacy, reading and writing, how text is comprehended and how writing is created is the focus. Writing well includes giving words to our experiences in a logical and clear and concise way. Students are encouraged to write about their experiences from the earliest age. Students are also taught to express their opinions through their written expression. They are taught to organize and convey their ideas and thoughts through purposeful writing.

Chalk Talk: Summer Jobs

Summer jobs can help you to be a better student. How you may ask? First, a summer job helps you to see and understand what is involved in a working life. By seeing this, you can understand what you need to do to be a successful student. The discipline you learn by working for pay will help you establish that same discipline in other areas of your life which will make you a better student. Second, you get a chance to see if you would enjoy a career in the area in which you are working. For instance a job at a camp can help you to know if you would enjoy teaching as a career. A job in retail will help you to see if commerce is your thing. It is just as good to see that you would not like something as to see that you would. Then thirdly, you have a chance to make some money which can be saved for college, used to pay current expenses or just enjoyed. A summer job is a win/win situation no matter what your economic status.
