Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Somerville District Curriculum

One major focus of the schools is the cross-curricular literacy abilities of all students. The Literacy Plan has taken a holistic approach to improve student learning and assessment scores. All teachers across the curriculum are committed to emphasize literacy standards and improving literacy scores. Writing across the curriculum means that writing is emphasized in all courses. Students are expected to learn how to write for different purposes such as providing information (expository writing) or trying to be persuasive. In all types of writing, students are taught the steps to take an idea through the stages of the writing process until a piece of writing is edited and revised.

Students enhance their writing skills in every class including elective classes. Allowing students to write different genres in different subject areas diversifies their writing skills. Students also enhance their writing skills by repetitive use of the writing skill throughout the school day. Learners also realize and identify the usefulness of writing in a variety of career fields.

Chalk Talk: Setting Goals

Some students and parents are satisfied with achieving the bare minimum in their academic goals. As long as they graduate, they feel that the future is set. However, those who want to reach higher, set larger goals, and achieve greater rewards in life, are those who go the extra mile. They are never satisfied with “good enough.” These students are the ones that win the awards, score highest on college entrance exams, and gain valuable scholarships to aid in future plans. Parents can help by encouraging success and providing the necessary tools and tutors that give students that winning edge. Teaching students to set goals and manage the process of achieving them is a crucial lesson of childhood. Goals should be presented as achievable accomplishments so that children can know what it is like to set a goal and reach it. That will help them later in life set larger goals and work through the steps to get there.
