Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Somerville District Curriculum

The Somerville Public Schools have developed a well-balanced curriculum that produces well-rounded students who have the knowledge and skills they need to be successful in academics, careers, relationships and life in general. The curriculum is based on the recommendations of two documents. The Common Core State Standards provide guidelines for what students should learn in math and language arts classes. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards provide similar guidance for learning in all other subjects.

As part of the 21st Century life and careers curriculum, all students undergo a study of career awareness, exploration and preparation. At the elementary level, students acquire an understanding of various career areas and the knowledge and skills needed for employment in those areas. Later, students identify their areas of interest and aptitude, and explore careers that go hand-in-hand with their particular talents. At the high school level, students begin to prepare themselves for future careers by developing personalized learning plans that include requisite classes for their career area.

Chalk Talk: Developmental Assets to Promote In Your Child

Although the success students have in school is dependent upon many factors, parents can work to instill essential developmental assets that will give their child the best chance of performing well academically. First, help your child understand that learning takes time, effort and patience. By emphasizing achievement to succeed and motivation to learn, students will understand that they must be active in the process in order to get the most out of their education. Second, help your child adopt a schedule for completing homework in a timely manner. Having specified times each night to read, do homework or study for exams is important for reinforcing the notion that learning takes effort. Lastly, help your child see that their schoolwork is applicable to everyday life. Helping them identify the connections between classroom learning and the real world will encourage them to learn and promote better understanding of what they learn.
