Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sonoma District Curriculum

In Language Arts, the skills of good readership, process-oriented writing, and thinking critically while listening and speaking are the broad focus. At each grade, students learn strategies to decode texts and write persuasively with an eye to audience. In Mathematics, the reasoning and logical thought that are required within subjects like engineering and physics are taught. Students begin with a basis in numerical operations and gain skills in geometry, algebra, and data analysis which prepare them for higher-order mathematical and scientific learning.

In Science, the processes of being a scientist and the fundamental concepts of fields like chemistry, physics, and biology are laid out as a series of skills and knowledge that students will develop each year. The framework serves to continually unfold new strategies to master complex topics and students are prepared for any field of study they should choose to pursue.
