Sooke District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Sooke School District on western Vancouver Island includes the towns of Sooke, Langford, Port Renfrew, Metchosin, and Colwood. As with all British Columbia schools, the BC Ministry of Education administers the Prescribed Learning Outcomes (PLO) curriculum at the provincial level, which provides a minimum standard level of learning for all students K-12. The standards provide for all essential learning a student is required to achieve before being ready for the next grade level.

We currently cover the following Sooke-area school district: Sooke School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sooke District Curriculum

The focus on essential critical thinking skills such as analysis, interpretation, and the ability to evaluate information and texts is honed during a child's English education. Although fiction and independent reading are emphasized, from an early age students develop the skills to read non-fiction, recognize point of view and tone, and evaluate the quality of informational texts. They are also taught how to participate in discussions and write about what they read.

In cases where a course or program is offered that the PLO curriculum does not cover, the Ministry of Education provides general goals and guidelines to be used by administration at the district level. Likewise, school administration is allowed to shape the Ministry’s curriculum to best suit the needs of their students. Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs are covered by the PLO curriculum as well as the specialized high skills courses, apprenticeship programs, and work learning experiences available in the secondary schools.

Chalk Talk: Choosing Electives

In almost every secondary school far and wide, students must adhere to required courses in the fields of mathematics, sciences, history, and literature. However, once they have progressed beyond rudimentary studies, it’s time to branch out and fill their schedules with other useful tools in various fields. When choosing a course schedule, it can be beneficial to get the heavier requirements out of the way early, in order to make the final year or two of high school less stressful. Credits toward business and computer technology teach job skills, while writing and the arts can help develop greater creativity in students. Combinations of both – such as graphic arts – are now included in many school programs. In some cases, students can even get all electives out of the way before their senior year, resulting in increased study periods or even early dismissal privileges.
