Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Amboy District Curriculum

The English/Language Arts curriculum in South Amboy is aligned with Common Core Standards and developed to ensure each child can build their own knowledge of a text through content-rich nonfiction, present understand of text with evidential support, and apply knowledge of complex language to the analysis of a text. Curricular units are built with the end in mind, which means that teachers develop lessons that build upon prior learning and genre or theme studies are enveloped within specific, targeted learning goals and applications.

These learning objectives are directly linked to the Common Core standards, and students are consistently encouraged to take ownership for their own acquisition of these skills. The PARCC assessments, which are more closely aligned to the Common Core Standards, will be ready for implementation in the 2014-2015 school year. These will give a clearer picture of how students are doing in achieving the standards.

Chalk Talk: Teaching Your Child to Be a Goal-Setter

Remember the age old age inch by inch, life’s a cinch? Most of us will admit we need to create small goals for ourselves to make larger tasks more manageable and less daunting. Our kids are no different; in fact, they might need to make even smaller goals to discover the joy that comes from feeling successful in reaching your goals. But what can you as a parent do to support this process without overstepping your boundaries? For starters, adjust your expectations. Your child may not know what goals are realistic at first, but resist the urge to do the work for your child. Rather, encourage your child to make goals that are specific and time-oriented. If s/he fails to reach a goal, encourage her to try again. And be sure to join him/her in celebrating her successes as well. The intrinsic motivation your child will gain will be invaluable for the future.
