Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Burlington District Curriculum

That the South Burlington School District boasts such classes as Advanced Digital Photography and American History Through Film: 1915 to Modern Movies is no coincidence. The overall curriculum of the district is centered on collaboration. In other words, rather than stand alone, each class is designed to encompass student interests, like film and photography, with science or history. For example, the American History Through Film course examines events such as women’s suffrage, the Dust Bowl, and race relations through film.

The collaborative nature of the district’s curriculum is not limited to the upper grades. Students learn to use reading strategies to identify the theme and scope of literary works, as well as gain exposure to important events and issues in society past and present. In the writing curriculum for the lower grades, students are encouraged to express their ideas effectively with selective word choice, clear organization, and logical developments of arguments using supporting evidence.

Chalk Talk: Why Test Rules Are Important

The simple sight of a scantron form can start hearts to beating and palms to sweating for some students. How can you take tests more successfully? One tip is to know the rules. For example, generally it is better to guess rather than leave a test question blank. But, is there a penalty for wrong answers? If so, a wrong answer may count more against you than a blank item. Other tests may have more than one correct response. On these types of tests, the answer that you record may be correct, but the item may be scored as incorrect if you do not choose all of the correct responses. The best thing to do is to start by reading the rules, and ask questions to the test administrator before beginning your examination.
