Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Elgin District Curriculum

The English language arts and history curriculums emphasize the reading of nonfiction over fiction, the writing of analytical essays over creative writing, and working with complex texts and a focus on expanding vocabularies. The purpose is to teach students how to be critical readers and persuasive writers. In mathematics, the curriculum encourages a greater depth of instruction on fewer topics, focusing on numerical operations, algebra and geometry, each school year.

Beginning at the elementary school level, these standards stress basic ideas such as numbers and operations to ensure students master the foundations of mathematics before progressing to advanced topics in high school. The intent is to instill necessary principals in students to prepare them to apply their math skills to real-world problems and challenges throughout their academic careers and beyond.

Chalk Talk: College vs. University

The differences between a college and a university aren’t always apparent, though there are many preconceptions. Fundamentally, the difference is how they are organized. A college is simply a collection of educational departments, whereas a university is split up into colleges or schools, which are usually comprised of specific departments. For example, a university might contain the College of Engineering or the School of Nursing. These schools operate somewhat autonomously under the umbrella of the university. Other differences are less clear-cut. Universities tend to be bigger, though plenty of them are fairly small. Universities tend to offer more graduate programs, though many colleges offer some graduate programs. Public schools tend to be universities, though there are plenty of private universities as well. For all intents and purposes there are few real differences between the two that matter to prospective students.
