Chalk Talk: Good College Essays

Not every college requires an essay, but most selective colleges recommend them, if they don’t require them. Many require more than one. Depending on how students apply, there might be different prompts. The Common Application has a list of several prompts students can choose from, though the main theme for most of these is that students are asked to write about some incident, person, etc. who is meaningful to them, and how it/they is/are meaningful. On the Common Application, some colleges have a Supplement, which may have one or more essays. These range from the dreaded “Why do you want to attend this school?” prompt to the ephemeral “Is there anything else you’d like to share?” prompt, which is usually optional. “Why do you want to attend this school?” is difficult because every applicant wants to say the same things: because of the programs, the location, the staff, the tone of the students, etc. The key with these essays is to try to stand out.
