Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Kingstown District Curriculum
The academic rigor throughout each school and subject is evident. By high school students study literature of different periods spanning from Greek and Roman texts through Realism and Modern texts. They are required to complete the Common Task of a 3-5 page research paper. High school students are offered a variety of engaging Social Studies classes. One such class, The Holocaust and Human Behavior, requires that students evaluate human nature through the historical lens of The Holocaust and its outcomes. These courses are thought-provoking and promote life-long inquiry and interdisciplinary learning.
Math begins with basic operations, problem solving, reading graphs, fractions, and decimals. Middle school math progresses to scientific notation, equations, integers, percent, and geometry. In high schools, students may elect to take algebra, geometry, and liberal arts math classes. These topics are threaded throughout students’ education so that a base in abstract and quantitative reasoning is developed.

Chalk Talk: Writing a College Essay
Most college applications require a personal statement. This is a difficult task for many students still trying to figure out who they are. Students do well by writing about authentic experiences that have helped shape who they are and who they wish to become. Thinking through eye-opening experiences, processes of learning and growing, major influences and what they mean, can be the base for a great admissions essay. Once you have determined what your subject will be, start a list about what that event has meant, its outcomes and personal meanings, and a full outline for the essay can quickly emerge.
