Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Orange District Curriculum

All students must demonstrate proficiency on district assessments in nine core content areas. The Common Core State Standards provide a framework for what students should learn and know in math and language arts classes in grades K-12. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards provide similar guidance for student learning in: 21st Century life and careers, health and physical education, technology, world languages, the arts, social studies and science.

The social studies curriculum focuses on developing student understanding of American heritage, and how who we are today is the result of the interactions of many peoples and cultures. Students gain an appreciation of citizenship, government and human rights early on. In elementary school, students learn about the fundamental rights guaranteed to them in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. Middle school students examine how the structure of the United States government came to be, and identify how the Founding Fathers used Native American and European governments as examples.

Chalk Talk: Advantages of Vocational Education

While many high schoolers enter the workforce directly after graduation, getting a solid training in a vocational or career area before entering the workforce can have many benefits. In addition to providing hands-on training and valuable work experience for students, vocational programs provide specialized training that is relevant to the student’s area of study. The programs focus on essential knowledge and skills for that particular career area, so students are never left wondering why they are learning something. Vocational programs are also time efficient. Many programs can be completed in two years or less, meaning students graduate faster and enter the workforce more quickly. The best benefit is that workers with a vocational education are in very high demand. In fact, graduates of vocational programs have a distinct advantage in the current job market over workers who have a four-year college education. This can be attributed to the fact that graduates of vocational programs already have the skills employers need and can be put to work immediately.
