Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South River District Curriculum

The South River Public Schools curriculum is comprehensive in nature and aligned from kindergarten through the twelfth grade to ensure that students continually build on existing skills and knowledge as they acquire new information. This emphasis on developing practical skills, in addition to acquiring knowledge, ensures that students can generalize what they learn in the classroom to real-life situations. As such, district students have excellent critical thinking skills.

All students receive a sound technology education, an essential component of which is instruction in digital citizenship. The elementary school curriculum focuses student learning on copyrights and terms of acceptable use, and how to ensure the materials they use are not obtained illegally. The middle school curriculum guides students in understanding how to be safe when using technology, such as not giving out passwords and how to deal with cyberbullying. Chalk Talk: Three Benefits of Playing Sports

Participating in school sports has many benefits, both on and off the field of play. Student-athletes have very busy schedules between school, practice, game days and homework. As such, they develop excellent time management skills that allow them to prioritize tasks and plan ahead - skills that will prove useful as they move into adulthood. Participation in sports also gives students practice in working as part of a team. They learn to recognize their strengths and weaknesses, as well as those of their teammates, and devise plans to work together to maximize their effectiveness. School sports also provide students with good lessons in dealing with adversity. Understanding that mistakes will be made and learning how to minimize those mistakes is a valuable life lesson.
