Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Stormont District Curriculum
When students are in high school, their academic courses are offered in Applied and Academic formats. The curricular expectations and objectives are the same for both, the difference lies in the topics and focus covered. The Applied courses provide a practical, real-world understanding for the subject and the Academic courses offer a theoretical and conceptual focus. Students have the opportunity to decide which version is appropriate for their academic plans and take classes which support their goals.
The English Language Arts curriculum at the district schools helps students develop skills in speaking, writing, reading and listening. Each of these are taught together. The students learn to not only read words, but to find information while reading. They then learn how to use this information to create reports that they then orally present to the class as they listen to the speaker. By studying this writing, the students are also able to use the tools to develop their thoughts in a way that their audience can appreciate.

Chalk Talk: How Can a Tutor Support My Child's Learning?
The decision for a student to work with a tutor is a significant step and can establish a relationship that enhances student's learning abilities throughout their school years. The opportunity to work with a tutor provides a student with the chance for direct, one-on-one instruction. The tutor will make certain that each topic or concept is mastered before moving on, and in doing so works with the student to find the optimal instructional approach for that child. The focus on how the child learns will help them to become more confident, self-directed and independent in their studies and will positively impact their academic potential and achievement.
