Educating Our Parents: Understanding the South Weber District Curriculum

The curriculum in Language Arts provides a foundation for learning in all other subjects, and the objectives support this goal in a number of ways. The reading portion of the curriculum emphasizes both fiction and non-fiction reading comprehension skills and seeks to educate students in the different ways to determine or analyze meaning in different types of text. Students also learn research skills that help them in other subjects and develop the writing skills to write about what they learn as they pursue independent research.

In the Math curriculum, students build from a foundation of early math to the ability to handle advanced algebra or geometry. From patterning or shape recognition, students develop necessary skills they will apply in their geometry or algebra courses in high school. Another major focus of the math curriculum is data analysis, which is a type of mathematic literacy, and students begin by understanding ratios and probabilities to later become able to do more advanced statistical analysis.

The schools in South Weber follow Utah Core Standards and subject area frameworks that detail the yearly learning expectations that all students should meet. These learning objectives are stated in broad terms which allow educators to determine the best way to deliver the lessons to their students based on learning styles and requirements. The schools supplement the curriculum with special services, enrichment programs and electives that help students receive their education as best tailored to their interests and needs.

We currently cover the following South Weber-area school district: Davis School District.

Keeping Informed: Recent South Weber Educational News

  • Scholarship Opportunities - The Davis School District provides a searchable list of scholarships available to students from locally-offered scholarships to national award opportunities. This is an important resource as there are a great number of scholarships available ranging from smaller sums to more significant amounts, and students can maximize their scholarship funding by being proactive in the search.
  • Community Councils - The district is served by a community council made up of family members and other community stakeholders who seek to advise the district on policy decisions. These decisions affect areas such as special education, programming, and a wide range of other school issues.
  • Utah Connect - Utah Connect is the digital platform for virtual learning for all high schoolers in Utah. There are many online courses for students to take in core academics, languages, advanced elective options and others. For students who are limited by their geographic location to the course options available, Utah Connect aims to make up the opportunity for them.

Chalk Talk: Applying to College

When you are applying to college, one of the most critical features of the application is the essay, however find other ways to make yourself stand out as well. This is critical because you will likely be competing against hundreds or thousands of applicants. With your application, attach work that is accomplished and that you are very proud of, such as artwork, pieces of writing, special awards, and so on. Be contentious about the entire application process. This means that you should be aware of deadlines for applications to be sent in for each school. Also, proofread, proofread, proofread all the materials you are sending it! Do this at least twice, plus have a reliable friend, family member, or teacher do so as well. Please do not rely solely on spellcheck! Seek the help of your guidance counselor or tutor—after all, he/she is there to assist you with this process. Your counselor can help you with all of the previous steps and let you know if you are on the right track with your essay.
