Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Southampton District Curriculum
The benchmarks provide a consistent set of expectations for what every student should learn and be able to do in areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening, language and math. Based on the revised English/Language Arts standards, all Southampton students will read more high interest and challenging non-fictions texts at each grade level. Through guided and accountable independent reading, students will learn about the world they live in. The listening and learning activities include teacher read-alouds, class discussions, vocabulary work and extension building.
The math curriculum builds a strong foundation beginning in kindergarten and continues to build on this foundation year after year. Southampton’s math program will now focus on fewer topics but dig into topics such as whole numbers, operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) decimals and fractions more deeply. The goal of the revised program is to make students understand why math works, talk about it to prove their understanding and use math in real world situations.
