Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Southaven District Curriculum

The Southaven Public Schools believe in promoting reading skills beginning in kindergarten and continuing through graduation. In kindergarten, children are introduced to rhymes as they learn their colors and the names of the items around them. This progresses so that by the time students enter fourth grade, they are using historical documents to become educated about the area around them, as well as the state and the country. Reading continues through graduation as students discover how literature and journal writing help them learn how to express themselves and aids in the evaluation of many works from many sources, including the electronic media.

Mathematics is also an area of the Southaven Public Schools which use literature to help teach or enforce concepts that they learn throughout their educational career. The schools use a variety of works including mysteries and newspapers to achieve this goal. They also use resources which tie math and science, as well as teach the students how to find math in food servings, the home, or even sports.

Chalk Talk: Questions to Ask at Parent-Teacher Conference

As the time of parent-teacher conferences, parents and teachers are aware that there is much information to share in a limited time. It is a good idea to have a list of questions or concerns to ask the teacher, so when it is time for the conference to end, the information that was desired is at hand. One question to address is what educational material is the student expected to learn in the current school year and how will the student be evaluated? It is usually a good idea to find out also if the teacher is flexible when it comes to teaching different types of learners, such as visual, auditory, or tactile. Another area to query the teacher about is what the expectations are as a parent to help the student have a successful year. With these three ideas as a starting point, parents can then further the conversations and have a successful conference and school-year.
