Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Southfield District Curriculum

The local districts use the national Common Core Standards for the majority of its curriculum. The Language Arts portion teaches elementary children to decode language and become fluent readers and writers. As children transition to high school, they read authentic literature and take part in activities which help students read text for deeper meaning. Students form their abilities to analyze and evaluate text and learn how to conduct academic research.

The Mathematics curriculum presents rigorous objectives in several areas, including geometry, number sense, measurement and data, and algebraic concepts. This instructional program is also organized so that students are exposed to the same broad topics each year and their depth of knowledge prepares them for advanced work in topics of Math, Science, Engineering and Technology. In this way, students are taught that there are several uses to mathematics.

Chalk Talk: Academic Robes

During this time, the very first universities were influenced by Roman Catholic clergy who commonly wore long robes. Soon, scholars adopted the look to signify their status as educated individuals. Today, the style has evolved and many graduates of higher education wear special colors that indicate their subject area.
