Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Spanish Springs District Curriculum

The goal of the high school curriculum is to prepare students for college and future careers. Students read complicated subject matter and evaluate difficult arguments and to use critical thinking and problem solving skills to solve difficult issues. High school students read a diverse selection of sophisticated literature, reading increasingly difficult literature in order to expand thinking, analyzing and problem solving skills while expanding their knowledge of literature and of its cultural aspects.

The Mathematics curriculum is designed to teach students math skills that cross a comprehensive range of mathematics. Students begin by learning skills with using numbers by counting objects and learning addition and subtraction using those objects. Basic geometric skills are leaned by recognizing and sorting shapes. By the time students reach high school, they have progressed to the use of Algebra and Geometry, learning complicated functions.

Chalk Talk: How to Prepare Your Child for College

There definitely are some important steps that you must take to prepare your child for college. Do not wait until the senior high school year to start preparing him. The first thing you need to do is to be involved in your child’s school life and stay in the know about school issues. Schools usually plan events where speakers talk about preparing for college. Be sure that you go to these events and take notes. Help your child by setting some academic goal for home, like reading one book a week and preparing for tests for at least 30 minutes per night. By setting goals for your child you are teaching the study skills that will be needed in college. Stay in contact with your child’s teacher and get to know the school counselor. These people are there to help you as well as your child, so take advantage of their expertise.
