Sparks District and Curriculum
Washoe County School Districts follow a strict curriculum based on the Nevada Department of Education’s benchmarks and indicators as well as the Common Core State Standards in Language Arts and Mathematics. This curriculum is rigorous, but also focuses on music and arts as part of a balanced educational approach. The overall curriculum provides a scaffolded approach to learning whereby students gain skills during elementary school which they will use throughout their education.
We currently cover the following Sparks-area school district: Washoe County School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sparks District Curriculum
Early math learning is integrated, meaning concepts of algebra and geometry are taught side by side and emedded into students’ curriculum. In high school, these topics are broken out into separate categories. In addition to Algebra I & II and Geometry, students are encouraged to choose from advanced courses including trigonometry and precalculus in order to prepare for college-level math.
Science standards draw heavily on understanding the nature of science and the scientific method, allowing students and teachers to work toward their interests. Skills like making observations, taking measurements, critically evaluating data, and communicating their findings are emphasized in elementary school, while middle and high school students are required to understand larger concepts like relationships between data sets, design experiments, and create and use charts, tables, and illustrations.

Chalk Talk: Hands-on Learning for Success
No two children are alike, and all students have their own preferred learning methods. Some students can simply read a textbook and understand everything about a subject, while others need a detailed explanation or a video to understand. However, all students can benefit from hands-on learning activities and parents can support this hands-on learning by letting their children “get their hands dirty” at home. The basics of mathematics and chemistry can be seen when making pancakes, the principles of art come to life mixing tempra paints on a paperplate, and life sciences appear as a seed sprouts on the windowsill. Parents can show their children that everything is a learning opportunity and foster their natural curiosity by watching for their interests and supporting them with fun activities and age-appropriate books on the subjects their children love.
