Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sparta District Curriculum
Middle school science learners in Sparta study the nature of science. In earth space science, students explore how scientific concepts and knowledge have changed over the course of time. Students identify the ways in which models of earth space science have changed as well as the specific people that brought those changes and understandings about. Learners explore the application of evidence in conducting scientific investigations as well. The types of evidence that can be used to draw conclusions about the natural world are discussed. The manner in which scientific findings are disseminated is explored as well.
Part of the high school social studies curriculum in Sparta is the survey of economics. Learners develop an understanding of how financial decisions are made on an individual, family, business, and government basis. Basic economic principles are discussed as well. Students learn about supply and demand, as well as production, distribution, and consumption. The manner in which these economic principles impact prices and growth of businesses is also explored. The role that Wisconsin’s businesses play in the nation’s economic activities is also evaluated.

Keeping Informed: Recent Sparta Educational News
- Students Raise Money for Local Family - Students at Meadowview Elementary School have raised over $2,000 for a community member in need of surgery. Students raised the money through a penny war that lasted a week. The students will work on other projects throughout the year to support a range of community causes.
- Students Raise Money for Local Family - A high school senior will graduate this year having never missed a day of school in her four years at Sparta High School. That adds up to approximately 715 days of school without missing a day and is a great example for younger students in the district. Congratulations on quite an achievement!
- Lawrence-Lawson Elementary School Teachers Receive Grant - Two teachers at Lawrence-Lawson Elementary School were recently awarded a grant from Century Link. Kyla Manske and Chelsea Evans received the $5,000 grant and will use it to purchase a reading intervention program. This will add many titles to the selection of books for young readers as well.

Students that participate in arts programs, including both visual and performing arts, reap a number of benefits. The arts promote the development of strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Students learn how to compare, critique, and evaluate in their arts classes, and those skills are widely applicable in other subject areas. There is also a correlation between studying the arts and having success in math class. Particularly for students that study music, math understanding increases greatly as the time that students study music increases. Arts students also see gains in English and language arts skills. Drama, in particular, helps students develop effective reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, which give them added proficiencies to be successful in their language arts classes. Overall, the benefits to students creative thinking and ability to appreciate the arts is central to successful learning.
