Chalk Talk: Encouraging Creativity
Creativity is used throughout life. It is useful when problem-solving, exploring science or when dealing with new technology and so much more. To encourage creativity in a child’s life look for interactive toys that can be used in a few ways. For example, construction paper and crayons instead of a coloring book or stuffed animals instead of talking toys. Find ways to use everyday items in place of store bought items. Think up solutions with the child and remember even if the solution does not work, they are learning how to bounce back. Parents can also build a child’s confidence by teaching them not to conform to others around them. Maybe the child drew a flower with a turquoise stem. Praise them for their unique thinking. Finally, read to a child or make up a story together instead of turning on the television or the computer. Remember creativity will grow with imagination, so parents may need to stretch their imagination muscles to help stretch their child’s.
