Spring Valley District and Curriculum
East Ramapo Central School District is responsible for the public education of children in preschool through the twelfth grade. The district is committed to the pursuit of academic excellence for all students. To accomplish this goal, many support programs have been implemented to target specific populations. The ESL program helps the large number of non-English speaking students obtain proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English. The special education program provides support services for children with physical, mental, emotional, or learning impairments. Other support services for children of all ages stimulate academic and personal growth. The district offers their services in schools that are safe, secure, and welcoming to all.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Spring Valley District Curriculum
Spring Valley students take part in a comprehensive math curriculum that begins in kindergarten with the very basic foundational skills. Students learn numbers and their names, and learn to count in sequence. A comparison of numbers is undertaken, with learners identifying which number is larger or smaller. To improve their recognition skills, students count objects in order to determine their quantity. Measurement skills are also acquired. Students classify objects into groups and then compare their numbers.
In the elementary math curriculum, students also describe and compare measurable attributes of objects. Students are introduced to addition and subtraction, as well as place value, and begin to work with numbers up to 20. Basic geometric properties are also discussed. Learners identify and describe shapes, then analyze, compare, and create those shapes on their own. Equations are also a central component of the advanced geometry curriculum. Students learn how to translate between geometric descriptions and equations.

Chalk Talk: Why Kids Should Learn a Second Language
Learning a second language is far easier for young children than it is for adults. Yet, many children do not participate in language learning programs even though there are many benefits for children that do. First, as the modern world becomes more globalized, being proficient in speaking more than one language is becoming more of a necessity. More and more languages are being spoken in the United States, and many in-demand jobs require collaboration with team members across the globe. Children that are multi-lingual are far more prepared for this global interconnectedness. Second, students that speak multiple languages demonstrate a better capacity for multicultural understanding. Language opens the door to accepting other ways of doing and thinking as well. Lastly, learning a second language improves brainpower, increasing the number of neural connections in the brain. This, in turn, improves one’s ability to think critically and problem solve.
