Educating Our Parents: Understanding the St. Charles District Curriculum

St. Charles’ English language arts curriculum focuses on helping students develop the skills they need to become proficient readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. The middle school speaking and listening strand begins with a study of collaborative and comprehension tools. Learners develop strategies for taking notes in preparation for a discussion. Students also work on identifying the main idea and key details of reading passages in order to have a clearer picture of talking points for a class discussion.

The elementary-level math curriculum in St. Charles includes several domains, including operations and algebraic thinking, numbers and operations, measurement and data collection, and geometry. The geometry domain helps students develop skills that allow them to reason with shapes and the attributes of those shapes. Different categories of shapes are introduced, including triangles, circles, and rhombuses. Students gain the skills required to compare and sort polygons based on their features, as well as reason and explain what those differences are.

Chalk Talk: Tips for Taking the ACT and SAT

Standardized tests such as the ACT and the SAT require students to demonstrate various academic knowledge and skills. But in order to show what they know, students must make smart choices when taking tests like the ACT and SAT. It is always recommended that test-takers pace themselves while taking the test. This involves answering the easiest questions first and leaving the more complicated questions for last to ensure they don’t get stuck on a difficult question. On more difficult questions, test-takers can increase their chances of selecting the correct answer by eliminating as many answers as possible and choosing from those that remain. Students also must read the test instructions as well as each question very carefully. Oftentimes simple mistakes can be avoided by taking the time to read through the test materials in a purposeful manner.
