Chalk Talk: Unconventional Reasons Why Kids Should Read More

Reading and reading often has many benefits for students. It is well documented that the more a child reads, the better they perform in all subjects in school. But there are unconventional benefits to reading often as well. Reading is an excellent activity to calm a child’s mind. Getting involved in a book can help kids relieve stress, even more so than listening to music or light exercise. There is an association between reading and the development of empathy as well. Even after just one week of reading each day, participants in research studies demonstrate increased empathy for others. Additionally, reading has long-term benefits that keep the mind sharp. Studies show that as people age, those that engage in mentally stimulating activities like reading have a much lesser chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
