Educating Our Parents: Understanding the St. Martin District Curriculum

The writing curriculum in St. Martin begins on the first day of school. Children are exposed to the written word every day. They soon learn the basics of creating stories and then editing them. By the time the students prepare for high school they know how to create reports, letters, presentations, poems, plays, biographies, essays and video narratives. In writing, students examine areas of literacy like parts of speech, punctuation, and clauses.

St. Martin Public Schools educate the children in measuring by first having them compare objects for length and weight. Then they begin to learn about the tools that are used for measuring such as a ruler or scale. Their education continues as they then measure and convert units, in both English and metric systems. If these students take geometry in high school, they can take their measuring skills farther by learning about reasoning and proof, lines, functions of triangles, quadrilaterals, circles and trigonometry.

Chalk Talk: How to Prepare for Kindergarten

Kindergarten can be an exciting and scary time for parents and children; however, with a little preparation the transition can be smooth with very little tension. To begin, about a month before the school year begins, begin adapting to the school schedule. This means the child may need to start their day earlier, eat at a different time and they will begin to work together on art and other crafts. This can be accomplished by setting aside times to work together on items. The library is also a source of books on how to help children prepare for kindergarten. Also try to find some fun activities to help the child learn their colors, shapes, numbers and letters. Then on the first day of school, when it is time to drop the child off at school, do not linger as this can make the child apprehensive about leaving you. Walk the child to the classroom, get them started at an activity or at play, then say goodbye and wish them a great day. This will help everyone make a more successful transition into the child’s educational life.
