Chalk Talk: Writing The College Application Essay
Most college applications require an essay. Schools want to know more about potential students than just grades, SAT scores and overall academic performance. They want to know about challenges, strengths, weaknesses, or an specific experience and how it was handled. Addressing the essay topic can be one of the more challenging “writing assignments” a high school student may have. It requires them to put themselves as the focus of the essay and do so that captures the attention of whichever college admissions person may be reading it. The writing requires time, a little patience, and a few drafts. However, the task doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Seeking help and thoughts from parents, siblings, friends or teachers should be considered. They can provide that situation, example or description of what the student needs to address and then build on these thoughts.
