Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Stephenville District Curriculum

A variety of literary works are used to help students develop an interest in reading. This is a part of the Language Arts curriculum at Stephenville Schools. When students are first introduced to literature, they listen, and read a variety of books by authors that many are familiar with. They also incorporate other subjects in the reading class to help increase this love of reading. This continues on into high school when students will learn about medieval times while reading Arthurian legends and creating their own family shield and crest.

The different ways of applying mathematics to a student’s life is demonstrated in a variety of ways throughout their years at Stephenville Schools. When students are young they are shown how math is applied to the weather, time, shopping and other applications they come upon throughout their day. As they enter middle and high school they learn how to take these tools and strengthen them. This is done through classes such as algebra, geometry, and statistics.

Chalk Talk: Life Skills for College

As a young adult prepares to go to college, there are a few skills that they may need to have a successful life while there. First, they need to be able to set priorities. Before they go off to schools ask what their goals are for going to college. This allows them the time to think about what they may desire to achieve and how they can reach these goals. Next, they need to be able to handle stress. This stress may come in the form of new people, and new settings. Help them develop healthy habits, such as getting enough sleep and exercise. Young adults heading away from home also should be able to care for their clothes and manage money. These skills can be developed before they take off for school. Discuss the steps needed to keep clothing clean and nice looking. As far as money, while they are in high school, encourage them to have a part-time job and learn how to save and budget their money.
