Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hollis District Curriculum

In the subject of English Language Arts, the focus of instruction is to help students construct meaning in authentic situations and for purposes that are personally relevant and meaningful. The students acquire skills and strategies necessary to develop and sustain their abilities to become lifelong readers, writers, speakers and listeners. Teachers use a process-oriented, research-based approach to balanced literacy.

An emphasis across the district is placed on writing skills. At all grade levels, students are expected to demonstrate those writing skills specific and appropriate to the grade level. Chalk Talk: Writing Assessments

As students progress through elementary, middle and high school they are expected to demonstrate specific writing skills at each grade level. The criteria and benchmarks will vary as students’ writing skills become more developed and specific to the writing style. There are, however, specific skills across all K-12 grades that teachers instruct and assess. Students will be expected to demonstrate the following within their writing: ideas and content, organization, voice, word choice, fluency and conventions. Even in kindergarten, students will be assessed on how easy to read their writing is, whether their sentence structure makes sense, the tone of the writing (whether there is emotion) and if the writing has a point or main idea. At any grade level, students learn and practice these skills regularly in all subject areas. Pay attention to your child’s writing and development of these skills. Search for areas that may need improvement. Work with your child on those areas so that they better understand what each means and how they can make their writing clearer.
