Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Stillwater District Curriculum

In Mathematics, the students learn how to classify geometric objects, both regular and irregular, such as triangles and quadrilaterals. They are also expected to master concepts in angle relationships made by parallel lines, such as by identifying and analyzing those in which are cut by a transversal. Learning about rotation, translation, magnification, and reflection is also used to identify geometric transformations on a coordinate plane.

In Language Arts, the students learn material such as the acquisition of new vocabulary. Vocabulary words are learned in a variety of ways, such as in context, and using the knowledge they have of Greek and Latin root words. The learners also use the knowledge they have acquired of prefixes and suffixes to figure out the meanings of new vocabulary. The students are taught how to figure out the meanings of words while reading by imparting their knowledge of the roots, the word parts, the picture cues, and through the use of their real-world connections.

Chalk Talk: The Role of the Elementary Science Teacher

The elementary science teacher prepares the students of the upper level coursework in the mathematics and sciences. While doing so, the elementary science teacher helps the students learn how to have an open mind and to use it for discovering new things. Sciences that are taught include physical science, earth science, and life science. The students in the science classroom learn the material from textbooks, but also from reading non-fiction texts and articles. They learn from the teacher the steps of the scientific method, and use this method in the variety of hands-on labs and studies they perform. Being an elementary science teacher can be a lot of fun, yet also challenging!
