Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Stony Plain District Curriculum

The World Languages Department offers important courses to help students prepare for fluency in another language, which is a major asset in today's global economy. Students learn to write in their new language, as well as speak or sign in order to convey information to a group. Interpersonal communication includes reading, writing, viewing, speaking, signing, and listening in their language of study. Students initiate and maintain conversations with others to convey information, express emotion, and understand others' meaning.

Social Studies introduces students to historical, political, economic, and cultural concepts. The role of movement is examined, in which students draw conclusions about the types of environments and settings that are most conducive to human settlement, such as along rivers and coastlines. Students also study the processes of globalization, including the role of technology in “shrinking” the world by facilitating communication between people who would be cut off from one another.

Chalk Talk: Helping a Child Develop Motivation

There are many things that can motivate a child, but understanding what works best for each and how they can be developed is an important part of parenting. Intrinsic motivation is the type of motivation that comes from within, and is natural. It could mean a child wants to please their parents or teachers; with this type of motivation an outside reward is not required to get a child motivated. Although this type of motivation may exist naturally in some children, many need extra nurturing. Extrinsic motivation is when a child strives for a goal, such as earning a good grade or starting a job and earning money. Teachers and parents can encourage motivation through positive feedback, clear instructions, opportunities to improve work, and lessons about self-monitoring skills. Students who can set goals, check their own progress, and attempt improvement will build internal motivational tools.
