Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Storm Lake District Curriculum

All English Language Learner (ELL) students are assessed and screened for placement in the language class that best represents their readiness. New students take a home language survey to determine their initial placement in the ELL program. In regards to any learning needs, whether a student needs additional support or enhancements to the curriculum, the district provides the necessary services.

English Language Learner students are continually assessed to measure their progress and development in the English language. ELL students take the Iowa English Language Development Assessment each spring to assess their language proficiency and determine their placement for the following school year. Students can remain at a transitional level for up to two years until they are fully integrated into general education classes with grade level content. Chalk Talk: How to Build Good Study Habits

It doesn’t matter if a student is in his/her first weeks of kindergarten or if s/he is a senior citizen taking computer classes at the local community center, building good study habits is crucial for academic success. This means setting aside a set amount of time each day to study or do homework, preferably at the same time to build a routine. It is also important to have a study area free of distraction. A computer should be present for work, not games. And while some people need music to study, others find that anything other than total silence is a problem. In addition, a student with good study habits will have the necessary resources available. If a student forgets her textbook at school, it makes homework that much more difficult. The important thing is to find what works for her and stay consistent. Because once one has good study habits, it helps establish that person as a lifelong learner.
