Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Strongsville District Curriculum

Elementary English Language Arts includes a focus on Reading- literature, informational text, foundational skills, Writing, Speaking and Listening and Language. Standard factors such as complexity, quality and range of reading are measured to determine a student's reading level, literacy, comprehension and application. Elementary math includes operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations, measurement and data as well as geometry.

High school math includes more complex operations like functions and statistics and probability. Strongsville's core curriculum also features a special certified 17-week D.A.R.E. program taught by a police officer in sixth grade in all elementary schools and in eighth grade in middle schools to help students gain awareness of the effects of their behavioral choices. This program sponsors special events during the year and aims to help students gain effective decision-making skills, resist peer pressure, and learn ways to choose healthy behaviors.

Chalk Talk: What Did You Do In School Today?

We sometimes take for granted family dinners that give us a chance to sit down and discuss with our children the events that happened through the day and what they learned in school? Most times all we hear is the reply, nothing. Should parents get concerned? Or should they probe deeper and ask more interesting questions? How we respond to our children's learning affects the quality of their education and their attitude towards their academic performance and bonds with peers. Asking interesting and specific questions that show genuine interest that involve explanation stimulate the child's thinking and interest in planning his homework and studies during the week alongside extracurricular activities. Showing an active participation in your child's academic career can propel him or her further faster towards achieving academic and personal goals.
