Struthers District and Curriculum

Students in elementary school, middle school, and high school in Struthers attend classes in the Struthers City School District. With just three school buildings, the district is quite small. This means that students enjoy small class sizes and more individualized attention from their teachers than children in larger school districts. Teachers and staff members know each student well, and foster each child’s growth by taking a vested interest in the child’s strengths, weaknesses, and areas of interest. Students are encouraged to achieve their highest possible potential.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Struthers District Curriculum

The Struthers technology curriculum is embedded into other subject areas in order to provide students maximum opportunity to develop an understanding of technology and the role it plays in various aspects of school and work. In addition to learning about the development of technology, including the planning, building, and testing phases undertaken to ensure technology is effective in its purpose, students learn the various applications of technology in the modern world.

Struthers’ financial literacy curriculum includes various components, including studies of business practices and entrepreneurship. The entrepreneurship strand highlights the importance of innovation in business to the overall economy. Children identify the characteristics of a successful entrepreneur, and explore the various means by which small business owners develop business plans and put those plans into place. The advantages and disadvantages of becoming an entrepreneur are also discussed, with students analyzing the risk vs. reward that each new business owner must consider.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Environmental Education

Many public school districts now offer environmental education programs as part of their science curriculum. The development of such courses highlights the increasing awareness of global environmental issues. These courses offer much in the way of practical benefits for students that take them. First, students get to participate in learning that goes beyond the classroom walls. Conducting experiments in the field gives students the opportunity to take part in hands-on learning that is far more engaging and interesting. This type of experiential learning also puts the impetus on students to explore and learn. Secondly, these courses facilitate the development of environmental awareness that will be necessary for improving human interaction with the environment. Learning the principles of conservation, restoration, and recycling can all help the next generation leave a smaller footprint in the world. Learning to be responsible for one’s actions and their impact on the world is a lasting skill that will benefit environmental education students for the duration of their lives.
