Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sturgeon Bay District Curriculum

Middle school students in Sturgeon Bay engage in a study of environmental science that focuses on ecosystems. Learners develop an understanding of the flow of energy between natural and human-built systems, such as the transfer of heat energy. Biodiversity is also explored, with students analyzing how biodiversity is important in order for all species to live, including humans. The human impact on other ecosystems is examined as well. Students identify the major ecosystems in Wisconsin and critique how humans have impacted those systems, citing specific examples of positive and negative human impacts.

Sturgeon Bay offers a component of the science curriculum that introduces students to food science. The changes in food preparation, storage, and transport procedures over the last century are examined. Students identify possible concerns about food safety, including contamination, and propose methods for addressing those concerns. Proper methods for maintaining a clean food preparation environment are discussed, including the use of gloves, hair nets, hand soap, and equipment sanitizers. The monitoring and inspection procedures carried out by government organizations are also examined.

Chalk Talk: Paying for College on a Tight Budget

As the cost of college tuition continues to rise, many families are seeking ways to pay for their child’s education. Fortunately, there are a number of alternatives that can bring the cost of college down to a more affordable level. Attending community college the first two years of school can save families thousands of dollars, as tuition and fees are far less expensive at a two-year school than they are at a four-year school. Another viable option is for students to take as many Advanced Placement courses in high school as possible. With a sufficient score on the AP exam, students can earn college credit while still in high school. Many high schools also offer dual credit courses, in which students receive credit for classes taken in high school through a local college or university. Each of these methods will save families money and allow students to start their college education with credits already completed.
