Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sugar Land District Curriculum

The writing program at Sugar Land Schools begins by teaching children how to create letters. Students learn this by first forming the letters in different media, such as shaving cream, before they put pencil to paper. They then learn how to create words, which are the foundation of the writing they will do the rest of their lives. Soon students learn to write sentences centered around one idea, and then they move on to paragraphs and reports. With the proper grammar and punctuation skills students learn, they will be prepared to build up to be writers that can face most challenges.

Geometry is a part of the mathematics curriculum at Sugar Land Schools. Beginning in kindergarten, students learn the basic shapes and three dimensional shapes. They look for shapes in nature and in their classrooms. As they continue at Sugar Land they learn how to apply equations to find area, volume and the perimeter of various shapes.

Chalk Talk: Anti-Bullying Initiatives

Bullies can be found in every area of school as well as life. Many children that are classified as bullies have average or high self-esteem. They believe that being a bully will gain them popularity. Generally, a bully is thought of as a person that attacks others physically. This can be true, mainly in boys, but those that tease or call other children names do just as much damage. Another form is usually done by girls, this is when a group of girls humiliate or freezes a child out of a group. Schools have begun to fight bullying, there are some states that have passed anti-bullying laws also. Some school programs that have developed to stop this action deal with social problem-solving skills.
