Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sulphur District Curriculum

The new Common Core Curriculum that has been approved for use in the state of Louisiana and most states in the country will be implemented across the school district in the next couple of years. Common Core provides guidelines and sets academic expectations for students in the areas of English and Language Arts and Mathematics which are designed to build this knowledge over the grade span.

In preparation for the implementation of Common Core. All coursework in the area of English and Language Arts and Mathematics are being targeted for improvement with an emphasis on reading, writing, and core math subjects. In light of this focus, the educators are aware that students need elective and career-oriented courses that help them connect this core learning to their interests. One area of growth in academic offerings is technology, and students have opportunities to learn networking, programming, and design skills.

Chalk Talk: Interactive Art Games for Kids

All kids enjoy art and being creative. Now kids can visit art website where they are invited to play art games or learn to paint or draw with the help of a computer. One such website is dedicated to the pop American artist Jackson Pollack. On the site at Jacksonpollack.org kids can see art that has been inspired by the artist Jackson Pollack including works that display his style of using paint spatter, paint drips, and even flinging paint at that canvas. The site also offers kids the opportunity to try this type of painting for themselves with the help of an interactive computer generated game. By moving the computer mouse children can create their own works of art and even change colors as desired. The interactive art design is also available in apps for use on other mobile devices such as iPhones and notebooks.
