From the time students learn how to count and to use the calendar to the time they take part in an advanced math course in high school, the students are shown how math is used every day. Chemistry is a part of the science curriculum at Sulphur Springs Independent School District. Chemistry is the study of matter and its various changes. This science is best studied in the lab and the students receive many hours of laboratory time. In their primary years the lab may take the form of a kitchen, as students are able to witness the changes matter undergoes in cooking. It is also observed in middle and high school when they take classes that allow them to see the changes of the elements of the periodic table when put under different conditions.

Chalk Talk: Aiding the Low-Achiever
Some teen-agers find many aspects of school difficult. No matter why, parents want to help these teens. One way to help is to pay attention to the teen. During this difficult age, they need as much attention, if not more than those children that are younger. When teenagers are not living up to expectations as you might hope, talk with them calmly and reassuringly so you can get to the root of the problem and begin working on solutions. Also, focus on the strengths of the child and look for areas where they can shine. Additionally, stay in touch with the teachers to see if they have noticed any changes or to stay on top of the assignments. Remember that, no matter why the student struggles, the expectations for their work should remain with the teen. Finally, celebrate their successes and achievements. With these suggestions, parents can help their teen gain more and more success in school and in life.
