The curriculum ensures that students receive standards-based and research-based instruction that is rooted in best practices. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Summerlin South District Curriculum

Mathematics skills begin with students counting objects and learning to recognize written numbers. Students learn basic algebra skills by using objects to count, add and subtract. They also learn basic geometry skills by learning shapes and sorting and categorizing them by shape and color. Math skills become increasingly more complex in each grade, with the district goal being to prepare students to use math to analyze and solve problems presented to them, and to use these skills in real life situations.

The Literacy/Language Arts curriculum teaches reading and writing skills that are designed to provide students with skills that will be used in all other courses taken during their school years. In Kindergarten students learn the alphabet and the recognition and sounds of letters. Through the use of Phonic, students learn to sound out words. Each grade following builds literacy and language arts skills on skills learned in the previous grade. In high school, students learn critical thinking skills and writing skills across different disciplines.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Teacher/Student Communication

One key to teacher success, and so student success is their communication skills with their students. Communication is a crucial matter for student academic and social success in school. It is so important for teachers to really listen to students when there are concerns. It is important that all personal and group communication is conducted with respect. Student do not appreciate being embarrassed in front of the class. Teachers should make themselves available to students to speak with and engage in non-verbal guidance during times of quiet work. By giving students a safe outlet, it will be more likely to come to you with problems instead of misbehaving. This type of communication shows students that they are respected and cared about and provides critical models for their future as communicators.
