Chalk Talk: Smithsonian American Art Museum
If you have a child that loves to tinker with things mechanical then take them to the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC to see the Inventing a Better Mousetrap Exhibition. If that is not possible you can still visit the exhibit online at the museum website. The exhibit features some of the items that are on display of early patented inventions. You can see inventions such as an early washing machine, toy wrestlers, one of the first prototypes for an artificial leg, horseshoe making machine, and an electromagnetic railroad signal. There are also mystery models where you get to guess what the invention was supposed to do. The site does give you a few clues to help with the guessing game.
