Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sunrise District Curriculum

The K-12 Science curriculum for Broward County Public Schools enables students to discover the physical world through scientific investigation. In elementary school, students mostly learn about what can be observed with the naked eye. Science hinges upon the ability to gain knowledge through controlled experimentation and observation of phenomena. As students progress through middle and high school, they begin to go deeper into the scientific principles that govern the universe.

The Math curriculum works lays the framework for problem-solving in different areas such as geometry, algebra, and data analysis. Within all subjects, literacy and communication skills are also focused on so that students are able to communicate their knowledge effectively. Technology is also integrated into learning as both a tool and a subject of study.

Chalk Talk: Social Learning and Development

No one likes to be bullied, but sometimes children do not know how to tell you that they are experiencing bullying. This is why you must be aware of the signs. If your child suddenly starts disliking school, ask if there is a particular person or group of people that they do not like being around. If your child begins withdrawing from family and friends, let him or her know that you will listen if they need to talk about anything. If a normally sweet kid suddenly begins to mistreat others, try to find out if they have been mistreated. Overeating can also be a sign of stress caused by bullying; ask your child if there is anything that is making him or her unhappy. If you find that your child is being bullied, let the teacher know. Participate in your school's anti-bullying programs. But most of all, be a friend to your child and give them some extra special attention.
