Surrey District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The curriculum in the Surrey School District was developed by the British Columbia Ministry of Education to set a province-wide standard of learning for K-12 students. Called the Prescribed Learning Outcomes (PLOs), the Ministry of Education details specific minimum levels of expected student knowledge for any given subject. These frameworks are regularly reviewed to be up-to-date with current learning expectations and so that students are adequately prepared for post-secondary life.
We currently cover the following Surrey-area school district: Surrey School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Surrey District Curriculum
The Prescribed Learning Outcomes are comprehensive and detail the many learning objectives that students should meet each year. For instance, in the English curriculum, reading skills for fiction and non-fiction, how to recognize point of view and purpose in a text, and how to discuss analytic views of different texts are all developed over the years. In writing, students are expected to learn how to write an essay for different purposes include persuasive, explanatory, and narrative. They are also taught how to edit and revise written work and have technology options for presenting final work.
Individual schools are allowed flexible delivery of these standards as needed. In addition, Surrey schools provide alternative learning such as distance education, special needs, and trade courses. Students are encouraged to direct their learning experience so that it maximizes their interests and future goals and to choose from the electives offered to learn valuable skills.

Chalk Talk: Formatting Your Resume
Most students in secondary education may not know how to properly build a resume as they enter the work force for the first time. A uniform professional-looking font and consistent font size could very well be the different between getting your first big job and being passed over by a potential employer. Without prior job experience, the best content for resume writing is often extracurricular activities or clubs, honors, and awards. With some prior experience even a paper route or a babysitting job is acceptable to list, as it shows a potential employee is trustworthy. Part-time or summer work may not require a resume at all, but proper formatting and resume building is a very beneficial skill to learn early. Most schools have resources that can help, counselors in particular.
