Chalk Talk: Music Improves Education

Music is an integral component of the K-12 curriculum that offers students an opportunity to express their creativity and expand their knowledge and understanding about cultures from around the world. Music offers many academic and behavioral benefits as well. Students that take part in musical studies demonstrate higher achievement in math than their peers, due in part to the analytical nature of musical studies. This improved performance in math extends to the ACT and SAT, where music students consistently outscore students that do not participate in music courses. There are behavioral benefits as well. There is a positive correlation between musical studies and improved attendance in school. There are also fewer discipline referrals, from reported for students that take part in music. As a result of these benefits, many colleges and universities place music as one of the primary academic subject areas in which students must participate in order to fully meet their potential.
