Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Tahlequah District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, the students begin exploring and learning about the concepts of poetry in the primary grades. In the upper elementary grades, the learners are encouraged to read, write, and study poetry. Elements of poetry are taught, as well, and the students learn what to look for when reading poetry. They learn to look for symbolism, figurative language, imagery, and other elements that make the poetry more meaningful. Knowing certain elements of poetry also aids in the comprehension of the more difficult literature.

In Math, the upper elementary students begin to do more challenging math, such as solving problems using the concepts of negative numbers (integers), squared roots, multi-step mathematics problems, complex graphing problems, solving for an unknown variable, and more in order to prepare them for the beginnings of algebra. The students are slowly introduced to the difficult mathematical concepts in order to build the strong foundation that is needed for middle school mathematics.
