Takoma Park District and Curriculum
Students in elementary school use the Curriculum 2.0 for the basis of their studies. All students in elementary school study Art, General Music, Health Education, Information Literacy, Mathematics, Physical Education, Reading, Science & Engineering, Social Studies and Writing. The goals of the program in Reading includes developing the skills to be able to control language, be literate and be able to communicate an understanding of the reading material. Students learn to appreciate literature, to evaluate and summarize what they have read. In Writing, students learn to compose texts that are both informative and take a stand, and learn to write for different audiences, and different tasks.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Takoma Park District Curriculum
The Montgomery County Public School district uses the Maryland Common Core Curriculum Framework for Mathematics. The basic goals of the curriculum are that all students will achieve success in acquiring basic Math skills which will be added to each year as they move through the school system. Elementary school students learn the basics of mathematical operations including counting, adding, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Middle School students learn how to work with fractions, rational numbers, mathematical expressions, decimals, equations, basic geometry, percents, statistics and probability. In High School all students must complete four credits of Mathematics including both Algebra and Geometry. High School students learn about equations, linear and exponential relationships, descriptive statistics, modeling and quadratic functions in Algebra 1. In Geometry, students learn the symbiotic relationship between Algebra and Geometry, how basic theorems work, congruence, proof and constructions, and the applications of probability.

Keeping Informed: Recent Takoma Park Educational News
- Education Forum - An Education Forum was recently held at Roberto Clemente Middle School with 8th grade students in charge as they presented different educational topics to leaders in the community, teachers, and school system administrators. Some of the topics included changing school start times, online learning and the arts in the classroom.
- Grandparents Day - The students at Georgian Forest Elementary School recently celebrated their annual Grandparents Day. The events for the day included breakfast, a special ceremony, performances by students, and picture taking with children and their grandparents. Honoring grandparents is an annual community event held at the school.
- Community Days - Superintendent of the Montgomery County Public School District Dr. Starr announces that he will be holding six Community Days in each of the Districts school clusters over the school year. The Community Days events allow Dr. Starr to meet with staff, parents and to visit the schools. The public is invited to attend the Town Hall events which are held at the end of each Community Day at 7:30 PM. The schedule of upcoming Community Days is available at the Montgomery County School system website.
