Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Teaneck District Curriculum

The Teaneck Public Schools strive to develop curricula that serve the unique needs of each student. Guidelines are provided for what to teach and how to teach at each grade level, by providing engaging and rigorous curricula based on the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS) and the Common Core Standards Initiative (CCSI).

Since preparing students for life-long learning in a diverse society is especially important in the Teaneck Public schools, particular emphasis is placed on the 21st Century life and careers content area. The purpose of these standards is to prepare students for their future roles in our increasingly global and diverse society. As early as preschool, students begin learning skills they will need to be active members of our global community by participating in activities that foster social and emotional development. In elementary school, students acquire financial literacy skills and receive introductory instruction in various career clusters.

Chalk Talk: Two Tips for Achieving Academic Success

Academic success depends on a lot of varying factors. However, there are two very simple strategies you can use to become more academically successful. First, use effective study skills that work for you. Some kids benefit from taking notes or making flash cards. Others benefit from group study sessions. Still others benefit from practice quizzes or online tutorials. Find the study method that best suits you and stick to it. When tests are coming up, don’t wait until the last minute to cram. Spend some time each night reviewing material so it has a better chance of staying in your memory. The other easy strategy to use is to keep organized. Use a planner or the calendar on your phone to keep track of due dates and exam dates. Use a separate folder for each class, so assignments don’t get mixed up. Cleaning out your backpack and locker will also help you keep things nice and organized.
